Nina Helstein

Raised in Hyde Park, Nina Helstein taught Head Start at Cabrini Green and Stateway Gardens.  After becoming a Clinical Social Worker, she has had a private practice of psychotherapy downtown and recently in Hyde Park. This work has been a source of endless learning as well as personally meaningful and rewarding. From a young age, Nina has been active in social movements.  For 13 years, she led a support group for families of homicide victims culminating in a PhD dissertation “The Meaning of Justice to Mothers of Homicide Victims”. With major changes here, more people are strangers to her and she feels less connected to the community she has known so well. She believes through the work of the Conference, we can be part of helping to assimilate new people, enjoy their contributions, and retain valuable aspects of our community’s culture.
